What is prompt engineering?
Prompt engineering is the craft of phrasing instructions to AI so that the answers become more accurate and useful.
A good answer often starts with a clear request. Who is the text for, what will it be used for and how long may it be?
Examples help a lot. Someone who pastes in an earlier passage and asks for the same tone usually gets a better result than someone who describes the tone in words.
The more the assistant already knows about the context, the less the user needs to write. An assistant that reads your documents does not need the routine explained in every question.
How it works
A well-written prompt describes the task, gives the context and says what the answer should look like. It often helps to ask the model to work through the problem step by step, or to break a large task into several smaller questions in turn.
Instead of asking for a summary, ask for a summary for a manager who has to make a decision, with the key points first and open questions last.
Why it matters
Good phrasing saves time on every question. When the same kind of task comes up again, a proven prompt can be saved and shared, so more people get the same quality. That makes AI more predictable in daily work.
What to keep in mind
Phrasing that works well with one model can work less well with another. Test saved prompts again when the service changes.
Whatever should apply to everyone, such as tone, language and rules, belongs in the system prompt or in the service itself. Then no single user has to remember it.
What it means for you
Collect a few good example questions from your work and share them. It teaches more people to use AI faster than a long course.
Common questions
Do staff need to learn prompt engineering?
The basics go a long way. Give context, say what the answer is for and ask for sources. A well-built assistant does much of the work through its system prompt.
Can a good prompt make up for the right material?
No. Good wording helps the model answer clearly, but it cannot supply facts that are missing. The material decides whether the answer is right.
